We live in a society that’s obsessed with goals. From a young age, we’re taught to aim high, chase success, and constantly look forward to the next achievement. Whether it’s climbing the career ladder, launching a business, or ticking off personal milestones, the focus is often on the end result — the destination.
But over time, I’ve come to realise something powerful: it’s not just the outcome that shapes us, but the journey we take to get there.
The Danger of Destination Addiction
“Destination addiction” — a term coined by psychologist Dr Robert Holden — describes the belief that happiness lies in the next place, job, relationship, or achievement. It’s a mindset that convinces us that “I’ll be happy when…” rather than appreciating what we have in the present.
This kind of thinking is seductive, especially in the professional world where metrics and milestones are constantly used to measure success. But it’s also a trap. It postpones fulfilment, masks burnout, and often leads to disappointment even after we’ve achieved what we set out to do.
What It Means to Embrace the Journey
To embrace the journey is to shift your focus from outcomes to experiences. It’s about finding meaning in the process of becoming — not just in the result.
Here’s what that has looked like for me and many professionals I admire:
1.
Celebrate Small Wins
We often wait to celebrate until we’ve crossed the finish line, but the real transformation happens in the small victories along the way. Finishing a difficult task, improving a system, learning a new skill — these deserve recognition. They’re the building blocks of progress.
2.
Be Present and Mindful
When we’re fixated on the future, we miss out on the richness of the present. Practising mindfulness — whether through reflection, journaling, or simply pausing to take in the moment — allows us to fully experience the journey and draw lessons from it in real time.
3.
Learn Through the Lows
Every career has its setbacks: failed pitches, rejected proposals, missed promotions. Instead of viewing these as failures, see them as crucial parts of your growth. Often, our biggest leaps forward come from moments that initially felt like disappointments.
4.
Stay Curious and Open
The journey becomes more meaningful when we stay curious. Ask questions, explore unfamiliar areas, and seek feedback. The more open we are to learning, the more enriching our path becomes — even when it veers off course.
5.
Trust the Process
Progress isn’t always linear. Sometimes you’ll feel like you’re going in circles. But if you keep showing up, learning, adapting, and putting in the work, growth is inevitable. Trusting the process builds patience and resilience — qualities every leader needs.
Shifting the Narrative
Embracing the journey doesn’t mean we abandon goals. It means we don’t sacrifice the present moment for the promise of a future one. It means recognising that who we become along the way is more important than the title we end up with.
So, the next time you feel anxious about how far you still have to go, pause and look back. You’ve already come a long way. The journey you’re on is worthy of appreciation, celebration, and pride.
Reflection Prompt:
What part of your current journey are you learning to appreciate more? What would happen if you let go of the outcome — just for a moment — and fully embraced where you are?
